Water fountains at town garden run dry during hot weather

Water fountains at a Weston-super-Mare town garden have stopped working – as the same time as temperatures are soaring.

The water fountains at the Italian Gardens in the seaside resort have been out of action for several days.

The fault which has seen them run dry comes as the UK gripped by a heatwave, with last Saturday being the hottest day of the year yet.

The breakdown is due to the pump which operates the fountains failing.

North Somerset Council, which owns the site, says it has now ordered a replacement and hopes the fountains will be working again soon.

A North Somerset Council spokesman said: “Despite the hot weather the fountains at the Italian Gardens in Weston town centre are not working at the moment.

“Unfortunately, the pump has broken, but we've ordered a replacement so it can be fixed as soon as possible.

“We're sorry the fountains haven't been on during this current spell of sunshine as we know how much people enjoy playing in them.”

The Italian Gardens were revamped in 2017 at a cost of £2.48 million.

The work was funded by a grant from the West of England Local Enterprise Partnership, through the Local Growth Fund, and was part of the town centre regeneration programme.

The regeneration of Weston-super-Mare has seen over £75m invested into the town centre over the last ten years.

The revamp of the town centre site was named as the overall winner in the Street Design category in the national Street Design Awards.
