How it works
Only recurve archery is contested with the discipline defined by the bow shape: referring to the curves at the end. Olympic archery comprises men's and women's individual and team competitions. Individuals go head-to-head in pairs. A new scoring system sees archers score points in sets, as in volleyball. There is one ranking round followed by five elimination rounds to the final
Who's hot
South Korea, particularly in the team and women's event. The Italian Michele Frangilli, above, world No3, is a threat in the men's event. The reigning Olympic champion Victor Ruban is currently 10th in the world
Home hopes
Much depends on who comes through the selection shoots at the start of next year. Leading contenders are the world No9 Simon Terry, and in the women's event Naomi Folkard and five-time Olympian Alison Williamson
