Cardiff container firm 'devastated' over NSW Fair Trading warning

A CARDIFF company that NSW Fair Trading has urged consumers to avoid says they are "beyond devastated" by the watchdog's notice.

NSW Fair Trading on Friday issued a warning urging customers not to deal Cardiff-based firm Ubuild, which specialises in custom conversions of shipping containers, advising that people not deal with them while investigations continue.

The firm's website says its work can be found "throughout the domestic, commercial, industrial, and agricultural industries Australia wide".

"A number of complaints about UBuild have been lodged relating to issues including defective work, giving false and misleading representations and accepting payment for goods or services which have not been provided," NSW Fair Trading executive director of investigations and enforcement Valerie Griswold said.

Ms Griswold said the company does not hold the required contractor licence under the Home Building Act 1989 NSW to complete installations.

"Information available to NSW Fair Trading indicates that UBuild has offered swimming pool installations while not holding the necessary licence," she said.

In a statement a Ubuild spokesman said the firm had been in contact with the watchdog and alleged they had been advised that their design, manufacture and delivery work does not require a licence.

The company said the warning, initially issued on August 20, had left them "beyond devastated".

"We deny the accusations," the spokesman said.

"They will not remove the warning and have told me to get legal advice to do so, which we have. We cannot believe what Fair Trading has concluded with no previous discussions, but even worse the lack of guidance as to how it can be removed.

"We encourage anyone interested in what we do to come and take a look, we constantly have product going through production to view on the workshop floor."

NSW Fair Trading advises anyone unsatisfied with their interactions with companies to contact NSW Fair Trading on 13 32 20 or online to lodge a complaint.
