Watchdog investigating after three men seriously hurt in police pursuit

A crash in Middleton which left three people seriously injured followed a police pursuit, it has been confirmed.

The incident has now been referred to the independent police watchdog.

Officers were on patrol in the Castleton area of Rochdale at around 11:20pm last night (Saturday) "when they saw a Ford Eco Sport driving at speed," Greater Manchester Police (GMP) said in an update issued this afternoon.

"Officers engaged in a pursuit before the car made off," a force spokesperson said.

"A short while later, the Ford was located after colliding with a railing on Morton Street, Middleton."

Officers attended and three men were detained the spokesperson added.

All three had suffered serious injuries and they were taken to hospital for treatment.

This incident has been referred to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) "in line with normal procedure", GMP said.

Lodge Street was last night closed close to the junction with Moton Street following the incident whilst officers dealt with the aftermath and carried out enquiries.
