Watch work under way on Central Park as Newcastle's giant beer garden takes shape

As Newcastle restaurants, pubs and bars welcome back customers for outdoor wining and dining, a huge new beer garden is taking shape in the city in readiness to greet its own first guests.

Work is under way on creating Central Park in Times Square which is a hive of activity as the clock ticks down to its April 29 launch weekend.

And, as the big day approaches, the team behind what is described as the North East's biggest beer garden - which this summer will be offering a programme of drinks, street food and big screen sports including Euro 2021 - have offered a behind-the-scenes look at the work to date.

It started this week and a timelapse video shows the temporary container park set-up start to come to life in the city, following a host of deliveries to the site in readiness for the installation of bars and seating areas.

Shipping containers were manoeuvred into place by crane and vast quanitities of astro turf have been rolled out - providing local company Easigrass North East with one of its largest jobs to date.

North East companies and contractors are being used throughout the site which, when complete, will feature a giant Mediterranean-look pergola; Miami-style beach huts and splashes of colour from deckchairs and tropical plants.

A focal point will be the 4k LED screen showing Euro 2021 and other summer sports including Wimbledon matches - some already a sell-out, with tickets having being snapped up in advance.

Those for the opening weekend are almost sold out but availability remains for the rest of May and Central Park will be running throughout June and into July.

Created by Two Tribes company, it is set to create more then 50 jobs across the summer, with a new team of staff being trained to help run the pop-up in line with Covid 19 safety measures and social distancing.

All food - which be on offer from a variety of regional street food favourites - and drink, ranging from craft beers to cocktail, will be supplied via app and table service.
