Watch: Winds turn movie night into ‘great mattress migration’

Dozens of Coloradans had set air mattresses on a sprawling lawn in preparation for an outdoors movie night Saturday, unaware that mattress anchors would have come in handy.

The accompanying footage, captured by Robert Manes in the Denver community of Stapleton, shows mattresses bouncing and sailing across the landscape after being lifted by strong winds that had suddenly developed.

Manes titled his YouTube footage, “The Great Mattress Migration of 2019,” and viewers will note that some of the mattresses bounced over a fence and into the Runway 35 community swimming pool area.

Manes told the Denver Post that he was in the pool with friends when “all of a sudden two mattresses flew in.”

They left the pool to observe the crazy scene that ensued, lasting about 30 minutes and involving as many as 100 mattresses, many being chased by their owners.

“Although we felt really bad for the event people, we thought it was absolutely hilarious,” Manes said.

Guests of the event – part of a four-night showing billed as The Bed Cinema – paid between $5 and $70 for tickets.

It was not immediately clear whether those who went running after their mattresses were able to catch the start of the movie.
