Well, that was a little awkward.
Iowa came into Columbus as the much better team, having taking it to the Buckeyes pretty good in the first meeting, but that was clearly not the case tonight.
The Hawkeyes started off on the right foot — building a lead of 7-0, but then things began to go south. The Buckeyes rallied and took a three-point lead into halftime before the wheels really fell off for Iowa in the second half. When all the scarlet and gray dust cleared, and Justin Ahrens finally quit knocking down bombs from deep, Ohio State came away with a 90-70 beatdown of Iowa.
And things got a little uncomfortable under the collar throughout. Fran McCaffrey got a technical called on him, just as his son did earlier in the game on the floor.
McCaffrey met with the media after the game, allegedly minutes after screaming and cussing at a ref in the hallway, but his postgame presser was much more subdued.
Watch what he had to say about Ohio State after the game thanks to Tony Gerdeman. He took the high road and gave the Buckeyes a ton of credit, but also criticized his team defensively.
Ohio State will next take on Purdue Saturday on the road. It doesn’t get any easier.
