Watch: Villanova’s Daniel Smith throws amazing somersault TD pass

Villanova quarterback Daniel Smith isn’t a big name, or a big guy. At 6-foot-0 and 205 pounds, Smith doesn’t present a physically imposing presence, and you won’t find him in too many draft guides despite the fact that he is eligible for the 2021 draft, and he threw 32 touchdowns to 10 interceptions in 2019, his last full season. When you do so against William & Mary (no offense intended, Mike Tomlin), Bucknell, and James Madison (no offense intended, Brandon Staley), the NFL tends to adjust for that.

But it’s safe to say that no quarterback in the 2021 draft class, be he Trevor Lawrence, Justin Fields, Trey Lance, Zach Wilson, or Mac Jones, has pulled off a touchdown pass quite like the one Smith delivered to tight end Charlie Gilroy with 3:15 left in the game, and Villanova down by two touchdowns to Delaware in a spring game.

Smith boots to his right, somersaults his way to the ground, and somehow has the presence of mind to flip the ball in the air, where Gilroy brings it in.

That may indeed be the wildest touchdown pass of all time — at least until Patrick Mahomes invariably tries it at some point in an NFL game.
