Watch: UTV feature on former Crusaders hard-man Kirk Hunter in 1995

He is the original Hatchetman.

A cult figure on the Seaview terraces whose hard-man reputation often preceded his natural ability on the pitch.

Kirk Hunter is a legend of the Irish League.

Feared by his rivals, loved by his fans, the former Crusaders midfielder was a man you wanted on your team.

A 6ft 3in' colossus, he has a Crusaders 'Hatchetmen' tattoo proudly inked on his chest.

Hunter spent 13 years at Seaview, winning league titles in 1995 and '97.

He was given a testimonial in 1997 against Rangers which included players such as Paul Gascoigne, Ally McCoist and Gennaro Gattuso.

His cult status saw Ulster Television do this special feature on the now 53-year-old back in 1995.

It delved into the player behind the hard-man reputation.

"To me, every team has a hard man. My name just seems to get brought up more often because some of my tackles were maybe a wee bit over the top," Hunter tells Stephen Watson.

"But every team sort of has a man who does that."

Then manager Roy Walker added: "I think he epitomises all that you want from a player. He's honest, he's hard working and at the end of the day, for a big player he has a silky touch and doesn't lose the ball too often."
