WATCH: USTA converting site of U.S. Open into temporary medical facility

The U.S. Tennis Association could start construction as soon as Tuesday on a temporary medical facility at one of the country’s most iconic tennis venues.

Chris Widmaier, a spokesperson for the USTA, told the Wall Street Journal that the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center, the site of the U.S. Open in New York, will be converted into a 350-bed medical facility to help overwhelmed hospitals in the area.

Per the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, New York leads the United States in confirmed cases with approximately 67,000 as of Tuesday.

Widmaier says the medical facility is meant to treat patients who have not contracted the coronavirus, but that could change.

“We’re there to do whatever the city and state needs,” Widmaier told the Wall Street Journal.
