Two mischievous young bears at a wildlife park in southwestern England caused quite the bother on Monday when they escaped their enclosure — only to gorge themselves on a full week's supply of honey before dozing off.
The 4-year-old brown bears, named Mish and Lucy, broke free due to what the animal park Wildwood Devon later called an "operational error." During their outing, the pair headed to the park's food storage shed, where they devoured supplies of snacks and honey and eventually fell asleep.
"Lucy caught red handed, looking very pleased with herself after filling up in the food store," the park wrote in the video's caption.
While the bears "posed no threat to the public at any point," visitors were briefly escorted to a secure building as a precaution, park officials said. Keepers used recall training to coax the pair back to their enclosure without needing tranquilizers or force.
After the hour-long adventure, the bears reportedly "passed out," stuffed and content. An investigation is underway to determine how the escape happened, though the park emphasized that the enclosure's structure remained intact.
Mish and Lucy were rescued in 2021 after being abandoned as cubs in the Albanian mountains and, despite attempts to return them to the wild, now call Wildwood's 40-acre sanctuary home. The refuge may be a few acres shy of Winnie the Pooh's Hundred Acre Wood, but is apparently just as good a place for a bear to find a "smackerel or two or three" of honey.
