WATCH: TV star Lorraine Kelly thanks litter pickers for cleaning up her home town

TV star and East Kilbride's very own Lorraine Kelly has heaped praise on litter pickers in the town in a video thanking them for their outstanding efforts.

East Kilbride Community Litter Pickers was formed last March and has seen volunteers from across the town collect thousands of bags of rubbish with more than 1500 members.

And a recent initiative - the 5x5 pledge - which saw the group calling on 50 East Kilbride residents to collect one bag of litter a week for five weeks, starting on January 10, has seen an overwhelming response.

It was this initiative that led to former East Kilbride News reporter, Lorraine, whose parents still live in the town, give her personal thanks.

In the video Lorraine, who attended Claremont High, said: "Hi, it's Lorraine here and I want to thank everybody taking part in the 5x5 pledge for the East Kilbride Community Litter Pickers all the very best.

"You're fantastic and thank you so much for all your hard work and for cleaning up East Kilbride.....I really just wish people would have more respect for where they live. Thank you for all your efforts all the year round."

Alice Alves, group founder and Fiona MacFarlane, organiser of the 5x5 pledge, described Lorraine's message as an "amazing" gesture and thanked everyone for their support.

They told Lanarkshire Live: "EK people have risen to the 5x5 challenge in droves.

"We've now met and surpassed the goal of 50 people to sign up to the challenge.

"EK Community Litter Pickers would like to thank every single one of you and can't wait to see how you get on.

"Don't worry if you didn't get signed up, just check out the website and/or join the Facebook group contact your local litter champion for bags and get picking! Together we are making a real difference to our communities and our town."
