Alabama quarterback Tua Tagovailoa’s story is one of the best in recent sports history, but the back up turned National Championship MVP almost wasn’t a Nick Saban success story.
The Hawaii native explained on The Dan Patrick show Wednesday that he almost transferred to the University of Southern California when he was not playing for the Crimson Tide.
Patrick asked Tagovailoa how close that was to actually happen and Tua said, “It was really close, I think. Because I wanted my parents to see me play. My parents wanted to see me play. Just doing things for my parents, making my parents happy and proud was probably the biggest thing I wanted to do. And I couldn’t do it on the sidelines.”
Tagovailoa managed to stay ready on the sidelines, though and did what he needed to do when given the opportunity to start for the second half of the 2017 National Championship game. Now, it’s safe to say that there is plenty for his parents to be happy and proud of.
