Watch transformation of empty Liverpool area at centre of 'New York-style' transformation

Newly-released footage reveals the extent of the transformation of an empty Liverpool neighbourhood.

Video shot from a drone high above Paddington Village, to the east of the city centre, shows a number of high rise buildings taking shape in a vast site uphill from the main city centre.

A statement on the project's website says that the 30 acre site will be 'a sizeable urban village, inspired by the sense of community you’d find in the likes of Greenwich Village in New York'.

The site shown in the video is known as Paddington Central - and is the first stage of a larger plan that will see a vast area past the new Royal hospital site completely redeveloped.

The site had been empty for a number of years following the demolition of a number of buildings including the old Archbishop Blanch School.

It's hoped the wider area, labelled the Knowledge Quarter, will become a hub for medical and scientific research - but hotels, shops and apartments are also planned in an effort to make the area a self contained neighbourhood.

A planning application was submitted earlier this week for a bronze hotel in the area, which Liverpool mayor Joe Anderson said was 'vital' for the development of the area.

He said: "The city council is delighted with the progress to date and we are already looking at the next phases of expansion and how we can attract more high-quality companies and jobs to the city.”

One of the other major buildings in Paddington Village will be the 'Spine', the striking new offices  for the Royal College of Physicians, which picked Liverpool to host its new northern headquarters.

There will also be an international college built for the University of Liverpool as well as a cancer centre to give patients proton beam therapy.
