Watch timelapse footage as giant £1.5m bridge is installed in Leeds city centre eco village

A massive new bridge has been unveiled in the heart of a groundbreaking new eco-village near Leeds city centre.

The £250 million Climate Innovation District, built by developers Citu, will consist of more than 800 low carbon homes alongside leisure facilities, offices and green spaces once it is complete.

The vast new neighbourhood is being built on the very southern edge of the city centre and spans across both sides of the River Aire near Leeds Dock.

In a bid to link up both sides of the new community, a giant 50 metre bridge was lowered into place earlier this year, as shown in the mesmeric timelapse footage above.

And now the rust-coloured steel bridge, which cost £1.5 million to install, is open to local residents, offering a pedestrian and cycle route into the city centre.

The developers say that people will now be able to walk into the city centre in just 10 minutes - halving the time it used to take beforehand.

Katrina Welsh, who was one of the first residents to move into the new neighbourhood, said: "The new bridge connects our community to Leeds and really opens things up for us and our visitors.

"Walking along the river into work will be a lovely way to start the day."

The Climate Innovation District is the UK’s first low-carbon urban neighbourhood and contains some of the most airtight and energy efficient homes in the world, with the first few residents moving in earlier this year.

It is one of a number of major schemes being built as part of the South Bank project, which aims to double the size of Leeds city centre by developing huge swathes of land south of the River Aire.
