WATCH: Tim Duncan returns to San Antonio Spurs as assistant coach

Tim Duncan is returning to the San Antonio Spurs as an assistant coach this season. Duncan, of course, spent all 19 of his NBA seasons with the Spurs, leading the team to all five of its NBAchampionships and winning MVP in three of the Finals series.

Head coach Gregg Popovich’s quote about Duncan’s return, as well as the organization’s rather nonchalant release on the news, caught attention as much as Duncan’s career development did on Twitter and it’s easy to understand why.

“It is only fitting, that after I served loyally for 19 years as Tim Duncan’s assistant, that he returns the favor,” said Popovich, true to form.

Duncan is a 15-time NBA All-Star, was the Rookie of the Year in 1998, is a two-time NBA MVP and 15-time All-Defensive Team player. He averaged 19.0 points per game and 10.8 rebounds per game over the course of his career. The Spurs retired his jersey in December 2016 after he retired that summer.

The Spurs announced long-time staffer Will Hardy is also promoted to the bench in the same news release.
