WATCH: The wild stats behind Tyler Lockett’s ridiculous Week 5 catch

If you could get past those Seahawks uniforms to enjoy Thursday Night Football this week, you were treated to a competitive game that featured the unlikeliest catch in the last two NFL seasons.

Seattle (4-1) trailed the Los Angeles Rams (3-2) 6-0 late in the first quarter and picked up a first down at the Rams’ 13-yard line. In the redzone, Russell Wilson worked magic as he scrambled left off of play action and found Tyler Lockett in the back corner of the endzone.

According to NFL Next Gen Stats, the catch Lockett made was the “MOST IMPROBABLE completion of the last two seasons (6.3%).” Wilson’s speed (13.62 MPH) and distance covered (24.6 yards) on the scramble and the proximity of Lockett to the out of bounds white (.2 yards from the sideline, 1.1 yard from the back of the endzone) made the catch improbable.

Factor in that safety Eric Weddle was less than a yard behind Lockett as he made the catch and it’s as easy to understand as it was to see why the catch was not at all easy to make.
