Morrissey’s maudlin musings on love, loneliness and longing have an enduring, universal appeal. In Mexico, however, his popularity is unprecedented, so much so that the man himself once said, “nothing the world holds could match the love waiting for me in Mexico City.” A byproduct of this profound fandom is Mexrrissey – the supergroup of Mexico’s most revered musicians, renowned for their reinventions of classic Morrissey songs – who return with a new album next year.
Taken from this record is their version of The Last of the Famous International Playboys. Entitled International Playgirl, it is the first single taken from No Manchester, out March 2016 on Cooking Vinyl, and includes some distinct adaptations: the group switch the gender of the song’s subject, a reference of Reggie Kray is now a nod to narco don Caro Quintero, and there is even quick sample of the classic Mexican classic track Tequila.

• A download of International Playgirl will be given to fans who pre-order the album on iTunes or the Mexrrissey store. The group will perform at London’s Electric Ballroom on 14 April. Tickets go on sale on 18 December.
