Watch the treasured Jaguar XK120 up for auction

AN ICONIC Jaguar that’s been lovingly cared for and wonderfully converted is coming up for sale.

Records show this 1953 UK special equipment version of the famous XK120 has been cherished by the same family since 1968.

What makes it stand out even more is that it was remodelled from a fixed-head coupe to a two-seater soft-top and restored in the early 1990s.

James McWilliam, of auctioneers H&H Classics, said: “Whoever buys this stunning Jaguar will know that they own one of the best survivors of its kind and a classic part of British automotive history.”

Launched at the 1948 Earls Court Motor Show as the world’s fastest production car, the XK120 was a game-changer in the automotive world.

It was powered by an all-new twin-overhead camshaft straight-six that would power the British marque’s machines well into the 1980s.

The clue to its performance capabilities lay in the name – this XK could reach 120mph in an era when the average family car would struggle to top 70.

But the XK120 was also a great all-rounder offered at a relatively low price. Unlike the Italian supercars it could outdrive, the Jaguar was within reach of middle-market buyers.

This particular car is expected to fetch up to £70,000 when it is sold at Duxford, Cambridgeshire, on April 14.
