BMW has unveiled its new 2 Series Coupe with the promise that it is a car “set to excite and inspire”.
Its sporty nature is immediately apparent thanks to the long bonnet, short overhangs and set-back cabin, with a mix of flowing and sculpted design features.
The German marque says a driver-focussed, high-quality cockpit sees the major control and function buttons grouped in a panel in the centre console.
Standard kit includes a sophisticated 12.3in digital instrument display and 10.25in infotainment screen set-up, as well as three-zone climate control.
The flagship M240i xDrive has a 374hp 3.0-litre petrol unit powering an intelligent all-wheel-drive system with noticeable rear-wheel bias.
This can propel the car to 62mph in just 4.3 seconds and on to a top speed limited to 155mph, with fuel economy of 34.9mpg and 185 to 200g/km CO2 levels.
Rear-wheel-drive models start with the 220i 184hp 2.0-litre petrol variant that hits 62mph in 7.5 seconds and redlines at 147mph. Its fuel and tailpipe stats are 44.8mpg and 144 to 155g/km.
Meanwhile, the 190hp 2.0-litre diesel is boosted by mild hybrid technology providing an extra 11hp, resulting in a sprint time of 6.9 seconds and the same 147mph top speed.
But it is considerably more frugal – averaging 60.1mpg, with CO2 emissions of 122 to 132g/km. All versions use an eight-speed automatic gearbox.
Going on sale in the UK early next year, prices are likely to start at £34,980 for the 220i, rising to £36,900 for the 220d and then £45,795 for the M240i.
