Watch the SAS-spec Land Rover Gunship that's a target for enthusiasts at auction

IF YOU’RE up for an adventure then you might want to buy this SAS-spec Land Rover Gunship.

The one-off Series III 109 is fitted with dummy machine guns having been restored by vintage Land Rover specialists John Brown 4x4.

It’s for sale in the RM Sotheby’s Open Roads global online auction, which ends next Wednesday, and is set to fetch up to £20,000.

The left-hand-drive machine was built by Land Rover at its Birmingham plant in 1984 and is thought to have been used by the German armed forces.

Two military enthusiasts in York bought the vehicle in 2010 and carried out a replication to SAS specifications. Both machine guns (.30 and .50 calibre) are “dummy” weapons professionally made by Crossfire – and the Landy is completely road legal to drive.

Yorkshire-based John Brown 4x4 purchased the Gunship in 2020 after it had been in dry storage for some time.

The team of experts recommissioned the vehicle over 12 months, improving the drivability with new, correct-specification parts. Military fitments and extra items were also sourced to complete the revamp.

John Brown marketing boss Greg Hendry said: “The military features and touches all over this Land Rover come together to create an exceptional SAS car recreation.

“While the car is left-hand drive, owing to its military use on mainland Europe, no windscreen or roof provides the driver fantastic visibility on UK roads. The Gunship is a thrilling drive that turns heads wherever you take it.”
