WATCH: The reason behind Nick Nurse’s controversial Game 5 timeout

Raptors head coach Nick Nurse learned a lesson in Monday’s NBA Finals Game 5 that he likely won’t ever forget.

On the heels of a 10-2 run by Kawhi Leonard to put Toronto up 103-97, first-year head coach Nick Nurse called a timeout with 3:05 on the clock.

He explained after the game that didn’t want to give away a timeout that would disappear once the clock went under three minutes. Per a league rule change in 2017, teams are now allowed to call just two timeouts instead of three in the final three minutes of regulation.

So with that timeout, he gave his team some rest, but he also changed the momentum of the game. Golden State went on a 9-2 run following the timeout to win Game 5, 106-105.

Don’t worry, Raptors fans. He’ll remember that next time.
