VAUXHALL has finally lifted the covers off the hotly anticipated eighth-generation Astra family hatchback.
As promised, the Griffin marque's new car features a striking new exterior design, hi-tech interior and safety systems, and the option of plug-in hybrid powertrains.
Traditional but highly efficient petrol and diesel engines are also offered with slick six-speed manual or eight-speed automatic transmissions.
The new Astra adopts the new Vauxhall Vizor face and looks far more dynamic than its predecessors, with sheer, taut surfaces and a low-slung look.
While it is not really any bigger than before, the Griffin-badged marque says there is room for five on board and a 422-litre boot space thanks to an increased wheelbase.
The interior is as revolutionary as the exterior – with a Pure Panel digital cockpit featuring two 10in widescreen displays for infotainment and key driver information.

While the screens are easy to use and there is wireless smartphone connectivity, important settings such as climate control can still be operated via physical switches and buttons.
The driver is also supported by state-of-the-art aids ranging from a head-up display and semi-automated Intelli-Drive road bends/lane-change assistance system to a 360-degree camera and ultra-adaptive LED headlights.
Vauxhall also promise that the seats maintain its reputation for outstanding comfort while also providing a sporty driving set-up.
Depending on the engine choice, drivers will have between 110PS and 225PS (reserved for the most potent hybrid) of power on tap.
Pricing and full spec details will be announced when the order books open in the autumn, with first customer deliveries early next year.
Vauxhall boss Paul Willcox said: “We are confident the next-generation Astra has all it takes to become another best-seller and continue to attract new customers.”
