Watch the new Mercedes-Benz electric EQA compact crossover

MERCEDES-BENZ has unveiled its electric baby, the EQA compact crossover, which it hopes will take the premium smaller family EV sector by storm.

Broadly based on the existing GLA, the powertrain for the EQA 250 launch model consists of a 66.5kWh battery pack and electric motor driving the front wheels that develops a healthy 190hp.

That’s good enough to propel it to 62mph in just 8.9 seconds and on to a top speed of 99mph, while the range is up to 265 miles.

UK pricing and specification will be announced shortly, although it will probably start at about £39,000 including the government plug-in grant.

Exterior highlights include a black panel grille, continuous light strips front and back to link the LED light clusters and a special choice of 18-20in alloy wheels.

Standard kit includes the hi-tech MBUX infotainment system with an EV-savvy sat nav, 64-colour ambient lighting, electric tailgate, reversing camera, lane keep assist and auto emergency braking.

A domestic wallbox will take less than six hours to fully recharge the car, while a rapid charger will get it to 80 per cent capacity in just 30 minutes.

You’ll start seeing the EQA on our roads in the spring and further variants will follow, including a more powerful all-wheel-drive option and one with a range of about 310 miles.
