Watch the new Lotus Emira sports car

THIS is the Emira – and Lotus says the newcomer is its most accomplished road car ever.

The famous British brand unveiled the mid-engined, premium sports car – described as “a junior supercar” – at its Norfolk HQ earlier this week.

Based on a new chassis, its striking design is inspired by the forthcoming Evija hypercar, with a mix of fluid surfaces and crisp feature lines.

The styling also ensures great aerodynamics and all versions come with LED headlamps and 20in wheels.

Power for the launch First Edition models comes from the familiar 3.5-litre V6 petrol engine previously used for the Exige and Evora.

From next summer, though, an AMG four-cylinder 2.0-litre unit will be offered, and there is a choice of manual, automatic or DCT gearboxes.

Across the Emira range, power output will be between 360 and 400bhp at launch, with 0-62mph acceleration in less than 4.5 seconds and top speeds of up to 180mph.

The car has a target weight of 1405kg in its lightest form and CO2 emissions will start below 180g/km.

The interior features quality materials and craftsmanship, with a cosseting, wraparound dashboard that includes a 10.25in touchscreen infotainment system and 12.3in digital driver’s display.

Driver aids available include adaptive cruise control, anti-collision system, fatigue alert, road sign information, rear cross traffic alert and lane change assist.

The Emira – the name means “commander” or “leader” – is priced from less than £60,000 and is available to order now.

Lotus boss Matt Windle said: “The Emira is an absolute game-changer for Lotus. It’s a hugely significant milestone in our path to becoming a truly global performance car brand.”
