Watch the new Caterham Super Seven 1600 roadster

CATERHAM CARS has launched its latest retro-inspired model – the Super Seven 1600 – on the back of the success of its previous heritage models.

The British lightweight sports car specialist says it is designed to reflect the joy and glamour of motoring in the 1970s but with none of the drawbacks. The marque says the newcomer, priced from £33,495, has an improved focus on driving feel and performance, as well as retro-inspired luxurious finishes.

Powered by a 135bhp 1.6-litre petrol engine mated to a five-speed manual gearbox, the 565kg roadster sprints to 60mph in five seconds flat and goes on to a top speed of 122mph. The powertrain has also been set up to produce a distinctive growl reminiscent of twin 40 carburettors of the era.

It’s certainly a head-turner, with classic flared front wings, retro-inspired 14in alloy wheels, a spare wheel and carrier harking back to the touring Sevens of old, and a choice of seven heritage paintjobs.

Inside, you’ll find an elegant wooden-rimmed steering wheel, Smiths instrumentation and classically tailored leather upholstery – with options to upgrade the dash, side panels and gear stick cover.

Caterham boss Graham Macdonald said: “We’re excited to introduce the most powerful Super Seven ever built, a reimagining of a true modern icon, delivering exactly what the original was designed to offer – a focus on driving feel and race-inspired upgrades but with some touches of luxury to the finishes.”
