WATCH: The moment Shane Lowry became the 2019 Open Champion

There were jubilant scenes at Royal Portrush this evening as Shane Lowry won his first major - dominating the rest of the field to become the 2019 Open champion.

The 32-year-old won the Claret Jug after an intense final day that saw him weather off the challenges of Tommy Fleetwood and the conditions to stay just one over par during a day where most of the competition suffered greatly.

The fan favourite was cheered on as he finally began to celebrate the victory on the 18th green before finishing his day with a par to officially clinch the win at 15 under for the tournament.

The Offaly man was roared home by an electric Irish crowd at Dunluce Links as he sunk four birdies on the way to the victory, with nearest challenger Fleetwood struggling in the latter stages.

The triumph marks a turning point in the 32-year-old's career as he finally gets his hands on one of golf's four majors, bettering his tied-second finish at the 2016 US Open.

Only five other Irish players have been crowned winners of the Open after Fred Daly, Padraig Harrington, Darren Clarke and Rory McIlroy.
