Watch the Lowland Speed Championship and Scottish Motor Racing Club in action

SCOTLAND’S close-fought club racing burst into life with the first events of 2019 for the Lowland Speed Championship and Scottish Motor Racing Club last weekend.

Competitors in the Lowland Speed Championship assembled at Kames Motorsport Complex in East Ayrshire and there were entries in 19 classes.

With separate rounds held on Saturday and Sunday, battle commenced in A2 for saloon cars between 1400 and 2000cc, where Derek Rothnie asserted his dominance in both events. Jim King and Ian Wright swapped second and third places from one day to the next.

In Class A9 for Mazda MX-5s, it was business as usual, where mere fractions separated the leading three of Ross Glen, Andrew Connell and Allan Harrop. Glen came out on top, posting an impressive 86.66-second run in drier weather on Sunday.

Peter Locke also impressed by giving his new Alpine A110 its debut run, clocking an 85.05 best time. However, the fastest time of the weekend went to Charlie Fraser in his Spire GT3 at 72.26-seconds.

At Knockhill, there were seven series opening their accounts for 2019. Robbie Dalgliesh was the class of the field in the Celtic Speed Mini Cooper Cup, winning all three races.

Reigning 2018 Scottish Classic Sports and Saloon Champion Alastair Baptie continued his winning ways by taking both victories at the wheel of his rapid Fiat X1/9.

It was a double celebration for Jordan Gronkowski in the Formula Ford 1600 Championship, too, while Andy Forrest pulled off the same feat in his Honda-powered Westfield in the Saloon and Sports Car series. Another two-time winner was Oliver Mortimer in the Fiesta/Mini Cooper S Cup.

A new series for 2019 is the Citroen C1 Cup and first honours went to Ryan Smith ahead of Finlay Brunton, but the pair swapped places for the second race.

In the Scottish Legends Championship, Stewart Black and Steven McGill won the first and second heats respectively, with McGill coming out top in the race final.
