Watch the Joey Barton press conference that has provoked quite the reaction from Sunderland fans

Former Newcastle United midfielder Joey Barton has always been a divisive character.

But during his four years at Tyneside, the 37-year-old became somewhat of a cult hero at St James' Park and was part of three Tyne-Wear derby wins - including the famous 5-1 triumph.

So it is little wonder that the provocative former Manchester City, QPR, Burnley and Rangers midfielder is not the most popular man among Sunderland fans.

And now Barton manages a team in the same division as the Black Cats, he hasn't wasted any opportunity to wind up the red-and-white army during the four matches his Fleetwood Town side have shared with Sunderland across the last two seasons.

Barton, whose side remain unbeaten against Sunderland during that period, played the pantomime villain again last night at the Stadium of Light as the two sides played out a 1-1 draw.

The stakes were high, with both sides still in the League One promotion hunt, and the Cod Army led until the seventh minute of stoppage time when Max Power fired home a vital equaliser at the Stadium of Light.

It led to an interaction between Barton and the Sunderland fans and during his post-match press duties, he was clearly in the mood to antagonise the Black Cats fans.

Barton referenced the difference in size of the two clubs, Sunderland's relegations, his past with Newcastle and how his Fleetwood side are actually better than Phil Parkinson's Sunderland.
