On Saturday night, viewers of RTE One’s Tommy Tiernan Show were treated to a showcase performance from the cream of the Irish rap scene, including Dublin rappers Mango Dassle and Rebel Phoenix.
Billed as the South-West Meets East Coast Allstars, the 10-strong crew was put together by Limerick MC God Knows, and featured nine rappers and DJ Replay performing a version of the God Knows track ‘Who’s Asking?’.
Taking a verse each in a socially distanced performance, the rappers were, in order of appearance, God Knows, Denise Chaila, Gavin DaVinci, Citrus Fresh, Hazey Haze, Strange Boy, Krome – all from the south-west – followed by Dublin duo Mango Dassle and Rebel Phoenix.
Following the nominations of Denise Chaila, JyellowL and Nealo for this year's Choice Music Prize, it's yet more evidence of the strength, diversity and unity of the Irish hip-hop scene.
