MERCEDES-BENZ has unveiled its all-new C-Class saloon and estate – with hybrid power and hi-tech infotainment and safety systems to the fore.
The famous German marque’s compact executive express has long been a big seller but its new eco credentials and adoption of features from the flagship S-Class will make it even more appealing.
The sixth-generation C-Class has a more dynamic appearance and highlights include a sporty bonnet with power domes and flowing side panels with few creases.
The trademark central star sits proudly on the large front grille, which is styled differently for each trim level, while the striking tail lights are unmistakably Mercedes.
Inside, a driver-centred design adds to the sense of sportiness – with the dashboard and central display tilted towards those at the wheel – as do aircraft-engine inspired air vents.

High-quality materials are in abundance, with the likes of chrome detailing, faux leather and open-pored wood veneer with inlays of aluminium on offer.
With both the saloon and estate being slightly bigger than before, those on board will find the cabin more spacious. And the boot space on the load-lugger is 30 litres larger than before, with capacity ranging from a useful 490 to 1510 litres.
Depending on the model, motorists will enjoy either a 10.25 or 12.3in digital display, while the central infotainment screen is now either a 9.5 or 11.9in tablet-style affair.
Users can alter the look of the screens in numerous ways to best suit their needs or desires, while the “Hey Mercedes” personal assistant has become even smarter.
As part of the hi-tech MBUX (Mercedes-Benz User Experience) package, you can even check in on your home to control things such as the heating and lighting.

And an online music service gives access to millions of songs and ready-made playlists, as well as personal favourites.
Augmented video, which superimposes information including traffic signs, directional arrows and lane-change recommendations on a live camera feed on the central display, is available as an option.
Meanwhile, over-the-air software updates ensure motorists are always able to enjoy upgrades or new features as soon as they become available.
Engines in the newcomer are all four-cylinder and mated to a nine-speed automatic transmission, while the optional four-wheel-drive system has been improved.
The petrol and diesel units on offer from launch all make use of 48V mild-hybrid technology that enable gliding, power boosting or energy recovery, resulting in better fuel economy.

The five petrol choices start with a 170hp 1.5-litre rear-wheel-drive unit that can hit 62mph in 8.6 seconds and top out at 144mph, with average fuel economy of about 39 to 45mpg and CO2 levels of 141 to 149g/km.
At the top end, there is an all-wheel-drive 190hp 2.0-litre capable of 0-62mph in 6.0 seconds, a 155mph top speed, about 40mpg and tailpipe emissions of 160 to 180g/km.
The 2.0-litre oil-burners develop either 200 or 265hp, with sprint times of 7.3 or 5.7 seconds and top speeds of 152 or 155mph. Fuel stats are about 50 to 56mpg and CO2 figures run from 134 to 152g/km.
And plug-in hybrid options will be available soon after the launch, using the same base engines but with an impressive pure electric range of about 62 miles.
The electric motor output equates to 129hp and will run solo up to a speed of 87mph before the main engine kicks in. What’s more, the 25.4kWh-capacity battery can be fully fast-charged in just 30 minutes.

Rear-axle steering is also being offered as an option to improve the already agile handling of the C-Class, while Mercedes says assistance systems reduce stress in day-to-day situations for more comfortable and safe driving.
Although there’s no official word on price, the saloon is likely to cost from about £35,000, with the estate coming in £3000 dearer.
The new C-Class will be available to order from March 30 and arrive in showrooms in the summer – go to www.mercedes-benz.com to find out more.
Brand chief executive Ola Kallenius said: “I’m certain our new C-Class will excite even more customers with a wide range of hi-tech features derived from our flagship S-Class.
“Our most successful model range will once again raise the bar as the most sophisticated offering in its segment.”
