Watch: Texans LB Whitney Mercilus gets a strip sack

The Houston Texans didn’t get to see Whitney Mercilus in their preseason Week 1 28-26 loss against the Green Bay Packers. But, they did get to see him on Saturday night against the Detroit Lions.

From what they saw, Mercilus looked like good ol’ Mercilus. Shortly into the first quarter, the edge rusher reeled around the edge — beating starting left tackle Taylor Decker in the process — and got to quarterback Josh Johnson and striped it out of his hands.

Though the Lions recovered the ball, Mercilus set the tone with the sack; in turn, reaffirming that he still has some juice in him.

Or, maybe, he had Texans Wire writer and “Texans Talk Podcast” host Anthony Wood in mind earlier in the week, Wood predicted, in a tweet, that Mercilus would have at least eight sacks. In response, Mercilus said, “too low.”

Though a preseason sack won’t count on the 2019 box score, Mercilus’ journey to proving Wood wrong started on Saturday night.
