WATCH: Tampa Bay Rays allowed the possibility of becoming two-city team

The Tampa Bay Rays have stunned baseball fans with an off-the-wall idea to revitalize the franchise.

ESPN’s Jeff Passan reported Thursday that the organization has received permission from Major League Baseball to explore becoming a two-city team. The idea is to play their early-season games at Tropicana Field in Tampa, then play the rest of the season in Montreal.

The Rays have been at (or near) the bottom of the league in attendance for some time now, even when the team is playing well. So the front office, per the report, is looking at splitting the season in an effort to keep baseball in Tampa long-term.

Montreal lost its MLB team in 2005, when the Expos became the Nationals and moved to Washington D.C.
