There's potential floods on the way in the North East as up to 30 millilitres of rain is expected to fall.
The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for thunderstorms that is in place until 9pm on Thursday.
Heavy showers have already started in the region and drivers are being warned of hazardous conditions on the roads.
There is even a small chance of danger to life due to fast flooding.
Nicky Maxey, from the Met Office, said: "The North East is within the weather warning area and you could see around 20 or 30 millilitres of rain.
"It's the kind of very heavy rain that windscreen wipers can't cope with and could cause some flooding.
"There is also thunder and lightning associated with these showers. It is expected to be heavy through the morning and most of the afternoon.
"There will be some spray on the roads which can make driving conditions difficult.
"The rain will continue into the early evening but it should ease off later as the weather front pushes through.
"Later in the evening and even through the afternoon there is a chance of some sunshine breaking through the clouds but it won't be constant."
The weather warning in place reads: "Heavy showers and thunderstorms may cause some travel disruption and flooding in places during Thursday afternoon and evening."
