Watch stunning moment pod of killer whales surround boat off Lerwick coast

This is the incredible moment a North Sea oil worker recorded a pod of killer whales surrounding his boat.

For some, catching a glimpse of orca in their natural habitat may be once in a lifetime.

But for Graeme Hately, chief officer on an emergency response and rescue vessel, it's a bit of a common occurence.

But even he was blown away at the stunning moment on Friday, which took place off the coast of Lerwick.

Graeme told the Daily Record: "It had been very foggy all day and it started to lift about 7pm, that's when Albert, my watchkeeper, noticed some orca close by.

"As the fog lifted more we could see more orca in the distance, there was about 20 of them.

"We get to see these whales at this proximity two to  three times a year but we all count ourselves lucky to have such experiences.

"I believe I have filmed the same pod before.

"We always get excited when we see them, especially when they are hunting something.

"They have no fear of our ship which means we can get in among them as well."

Graeme shares his life at sea through his Bigwavemaster1 YouTube channel which you can check out here.
