Watch staggering thief smash his way into Newcastle restaurant and walk out with till

Staggering and swaying on the dark city street, he looks incapable of staying on his feet.

But this burglar managed to smash his way into a restaurant and steal hundreds of pounds, despite being obviously worse for wear.

The seemingly-intoxicated thief was caught on camera lurking outside Canaca, on Saville Row in Newcastle city centre , waiting to strike.

Then with his every move captured on CCTV the hunched bandit smashes a glass door before crawling into the restaurant and helping himself to a till containing more than £750 in takings.

Police are now probing the break-in, which happened early on Sunday morning.

And today Canaca's co-owner, Mark Burdis, has told of his anger at being targeted.

Mark, 34, said: "It is upsetting that it's happened. The unnerving thing is he seemed to know where the cash register was.

Canaca serves what it describes as "street food from all over the world".

The restaurant was closed on Sunday so Mark did not discover what had happened until Monday morning.

He said: "Our chef arrived and found the door had been boarded up. He had a look and saw the broken glass and that there was something missing from around the till.

"We rushed to the shop and found the door had been broken and the cash register had been stolen. I called the police but they were already aware."

Mark went to view his CCTV footage, and discovered the entire break-in had been recorded.

He continued: "I went into the office and reviewed the CCTV footage. On my external cameras, from around 4am, I could see a man who was clearly drunk or on drugs stumbling around outside.

"He eventually picked something up off the floor and throws it into the glass door. It's safety glass so it shatters.

"He came back five minutes later and pushed the glass away and dives into the property on his knees and makes his way through the property to the cash register."

The thief took the till, containing all the restaurant's takings from Friday and Saturday and made his way out the building the way he came in.

A Northumbria Police spokeswoman said: "At about 5.30am on Sunday we received a report front door of Canaca on Saville Row in Newcastle had been damaged.

"Officers attended the scene where it appeared a burglary had taken place.

"It is believed an unknown offender has entered the premises by smashing the glass panel on the front door. Enquiries into the incident are ongoing and anyone with information is asked to contact police."
