Watch - spectacular moment rare fireball explodes above sky

CCTV has captured the incredible moment a huge fireball was seen exploding in the sky above Derby.

The phenomenon was caught on a doorbell security camera and seen by residents in the area.

Gary Rogers, 52, was lying in bed when he got a notification on his phone alerting him to movement outside his home, reports Derbyshire Live.

When Mr Rogers checked the footage, he was shocked to see a massive fireball light up the sky. Watch the video above.

He told Derbyshire Live: “I was sitting in bed about to go to sleep and my phone pinged. I couldn’t believe it.

“I thought it was a firework at first, but I listened to the sound and you couldn’t hear any noise.

“I couldn’t believe my eyes when I saw it. I thought, ‘what is that?’

“Some of my friends said it looked like a meteor.

“I was really surprised. I have never seen a meteor before, only shooting stars.

“I thought it’s definitely not a firework, I had never seen a firework light up the horizon like that.”

A spokesperson for the Royal Astronomical Society said: "From the picture it looks like a 'fireball' - an unusually bright meteor - though that doesn't mean anything reached the ground. It's a fairly rare and spectacular sight though, so those witnessing it should consider themselves lucky!"
