Coco Gauff’s unexpected run at Wimbledon came to an end Monday, losing 6-3, 6-3 to Simona Halep in the fourth round.
The 15 year old became an overnight sensation last week, downing five-time champion Venus Williams in the first round and then posting a gutsy comeback win over Polona Hercog in the third round.
Gauff is the youngest player in the pro era to qualify for Wimbledon’s main draw and quickly went from a relative unknown to the darling of the tournament, garnering a standing ovation as she exited the court Monday in London.
Halep, currently ranked seventh in the world by the Women’s Tennis Association, advances to the quarterfinals to face China’s Shuai Zhang.
