WATCH: Shocking video of man challenging cops with 'weapon' in major EK incident

A shocking video has circulated of a man being rammed to the ground by a police car in East Kilbride after allegedly challenging officers with what appears to be a weapon.

Police swarmed to the Westwood Road area of the town yesterday evening around 7pm.

Dramatic footage shows the man carrying what is thought to be a knife, while officers try to restrain him.

The man, in a bright yellow t-shirt, can be seen repeatedly running towards cops brandishing an apparent weapon, with officers pointing tasers at him.

The video shows the man appearing to run towards two policemen in an attempt to chase them onto the road.

He then returns to the pavement before moving towards another policeman, who stands his ground.

In the audio of the video, cops can be heard screaming "put the knife down" numerous times with the man failing to do so and continuing to square up to officers.

At one point, even after appearing to slip on the grass verge, he gets back up and runs towards cops once more.

Eventually, a police car can be seen, lights flashing, slowly moving along the grass verge and bumping into the assailant, knocking him to the ground, allowing at least half a dozen officers to pin him down and arrest him.

One shocked bystander told Lanarkshire Live : "There were police everywhere.

"This was absolutely unbelievable - there's absolutely no excuse for this behaviour."

Chief Superintendent Alan Waddell confirmed officers had received reports of concern for a man who was believed to be intoxicated and allegedly carrying two knives in a residential area of Quebec Drive, East Kilbride, around 6pm on Wednesday

He told Lanarkshire Live: “Response officers were first on the scene and following alleged threats to officers and damage to police vehicles, a tactical decision was made to subdue the man with low speed contact from a police car.

“The 37-year-old man was arrested and taken to Wishaw General as a precaution, but suffered no injuries. No members of the public or police officers were injured.

“He was charged with various offences in connection with the incident and is due to appear at Hamilton Sheriff Court today.”

“As PAVA was deployed and in line with normal procedure, a referral will be made to the Police Investigations and Review Commissioner.”
