WATCH: Saquon Barkley told by specialist he does not need surgery for ankle injury

New York Giants running back Saquon Barkley got a second opinion on his injured ankle and will not have to have surgery.

According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, the reigning NFL Rookie of the Year met with “noted specialist Dr. Robert Anderson in Green Bay with a recommendation of no surgery.”

Barkley suffered a high ankle sprain in the Giants (1-2) Week 3 game at Tampa Bay (1-2). The ball-carrier said that he suffered a similar injury at Penn State.

Rapoport notes that one of the recovery options that was being considered for the Giants star was tightrope surgery, which can accelerate the length of time an ankle injury like Barkley’s takes to heal. Alabama quarterback Tua Tagovailoa had the surgery on his ankle last season after getting hurt in the SEC Championship and he was able to return to practice two weeks later.

Without surgery, the standard expectation with a high ankle sprain is that it will take six to eight weeks to heal.
