WATCH: Sam Darnold Ruled Out For Jets’ Week 5 Game

The Jets ruled out Sam Darnold for the Week 5 game at Philadelphia. Head coach Adam Gase Friday that doctors tested the quarterback late Thursday and that the tests were not positive enough for Darnold to be cleared to play versus the Eagles (2-2).

The 22-year-old QB was sidelined after Week 1 when he was diagnosed with mononucleosis on Sept. 11. In Week 2, backup quarterback Trevor Siemian suffered a season-ending ankle injury and the Jets (0-3) turned to Luke Falk in his NFL debut mid-game, and then first career start in Week 3. The Jets’ bye week was during Week 4 and Darnold returned to practice at the beginning of this week.

Gase said Wednesday that he was willing to wait until Sunday morning to name a quarterback and Darnold said Thursday that he felt ready to play (but also that he didn’t want to die). There is optimism that the 2018 third overall pick of the NFL Draft will return to year two on Oct. 13 as the team faces the Dallas Cowboys (3-1).
