NEW DELHI: Captain Rohit Sharma was two runs short of becoming the first Indian to score 400 runs in this edition of the World Cup.
He achieved that milestone on the first ball after India was put into bat by Sri Lanka at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on Thursday.
Sri Lanka left-arm seamer Dilshan Madushanka bowled an inswinger first ball and Rohit was right up to it by flicking it gracefully to the deep square leg fence.
But Madushanka had his revenge the next ball by bowling an absolute beauty on good length that held its line and carried away with the angle.
Rohit was again expecting the ball to come back in and ended up playing down the wrong line, the ball went past the outside edge and crashed into the top of off-stump.
