Watch: Rising water levels may cause extensive damage to Spanish Arch in Galway ahead of Storm Jorge

Rising water levels in Galway may cause extensive damage to one of its most famous landmarks.

The video sbove shows flood defences in place along the Spanish Arch as dangerously high water levels threaten to overflow.

Storm Jorge is expected to hit Galway early Saturday morning and continue into the early hours of Sunday.

Approximately one million gallons of water flow through the Salmon Weir every three seconds.

The Weir is already coping with an immense volume of water before the storm has even hit.

Storm Jorge, follows  Storms Ciara and Dennis which have left tens of thousands of acres  of land at saturation point and  rivers already in a state of flood - especially the Shannon catchment.

Met Eireann says up to three times the normal amount of rainfall for February has already fallen in some areas.

Rainfall records have also been broken at Shannon Airport, Newport, Claremorris, and Knock, as well as Casement Aerodrome.

The Phoenix Park has had its wettest February in 170 years.

The NECG is now expected to meet throughout the weekend up to and including Sunday as the impact of the storm unfolds.

Met Eireann say the Orange warning covers Galway, Mayo, Clare and Kerry from 6am tomorrow until 3am on Sunday 

It comes into effect in Donegal, Leitrim and Sligo at 12pm tomorrow until 3am on Sunday.

A Status Yellow Wind Warning is in place for all of Leinster, Cavan, Monaghan, Roscommon, Cork, Limerick, Tipperary and Waterford from 9am tomorrow.

A Status Yellow Rainfall Warning remains in place for Munster, Connacht and Donegal until tomorrow night.

All these warnings may be extended and raised later today.
