The Washington Redskins placed seven-time Pro Bowl offensive tackle Trent Williams on the reserve/non-football injury list Thursday, meaning the 31-year-old will not play for the team this season.
Williams was absent from the team from the spring until last week, reporting only on Tuesday ahead of the trade deadline to maintain eligibility for free agency next year. Two days later, Williams revealed Thursday that he has been diagnosed with Dermatofibrosarcoma Protuberans, a soft-tissue sarcoma that develops in the deep layers of skin, on his skill.
The revelation was part of the first public discussion Williams had about his absence from the team. The offensive lineman also said on Oct. 31 that the team had refused to test the growth for six years after finding out about it.
Previous even to last week, the Redskins had a roster exemption for Williams because he failed to pass a physical when he cited discomfort where the growth was when trying to put on a helmet.
According to a statement released by the Redskins, the franchise requested that the NFL’s Management Council form a joint committee with the NFL Players Association in order to review Williams’ medical treatment.
