Watch real cunning moment Charles Ingram cheated his way to a million

This was the hair-raising moment Charles Ingram cheated his way to the jack pot in the hot seat on Millionaire.

The criminal mastermind had enlisted the help of quiz brainbox Terence Whittock and his wife Diana to scam ITV out of the prize fund.

Opposite Who Wants To Be A Millionaire host Chris Tarrant, the quizzer mulled over the one million pound question by reading all of the answers aloud.

Charles said: "I'm not sure, however."

Chris hit back: "You haven't been sure since question two."

The million pound question was: A number one followed by one hundred zeros is known by what name?

Charles carefully read each of the answers from A-D aloud to the audience.

With Whittock in earshot from the fastest finger seat, he coughed at the right answer "googol".

As one million pounds was hanging in the balance, Charles repeated "googol" just to check it was the right answer.

He said: "I think it's a nanomole. It could be a gigabit. It's not a megatron. I don't think I've heard of a googol... Process of elimination i think of googol."

Chris taunted him: "You thought it was a nanomole."

He added: "Charles, gimme that cheque, you no longer that, you just won one million pounds."

Glitter from above showered Charles and Chris when he answered correctly on the million pound question.

But it didn't escape the eagle eyes and ears of ITV producers.

The Ingrams were given 18 months suspended sentence for two years and fined £15,000 each.

Accomplice Whittock was slapped with a 12-month sentence suspended for two years and he was fined £10,000 with £7,500 in costs.
