Watch Rathcoole archive video and step back in time

This was Rathcoole in the 1950s when it was all shiny and new.

The Newtownabbey housing became home to hundreds of families displaced by the demolition of inner city housing in Belfast city.

And this BBC archive is bound to prompt a few fond memories for many after they moved to a newly developed part of Co Antrim.

Rathcoole promised to be bigger than Newtownards in Co Down , when it was finally finished with up to 12,000 people moving in.

And with shops and churches on the doorstep, it promised a modern setting, with quality houses and a community spirit.

Today it remains the largest housing estate in Northern Ireland.
