The New York Jets are dealing with the same type of impasse they began last season with, despite having a new general manager and a new head coach, as their top rookie is unsigned and did not report to training camp with the team Wednesday.
Former Alabama defensive end Quinnen Williams is slotted to receive a fully-guaranteed $32.6 million. The reason for his contract not being signed by the time players reported to camp is reported that Williams wants the entirety of his expected $21.7 million signing bonus to be paid by the end of the year, while the team wants to push part of the payment to next year.
Williams was limited at minicamp earlier this summer with a calf issue, but he is expected to play a key role and potentially starts.
Head coach Adam Gase does not seem phased by the situation, even joking that’d he only become concerned if Williams was unsigned still when the team got to the playoffs.
Certainly, Sam Darnold was unaffected by missing three days last season as he went on to win the starting quarterback job as a rookie.
