Phil Mickelson managed to turn an eyebrow-raising intentional two-stroke penalty at the 2018 US Open into his own modification on the traditional, “I love New York,” logo.
Lefty gave his putt on 13 an extra tap last year at the U.S. Open at Shinnecock Hills on Eastern Long Island and while the golf world and New Yorkers first perceived the putt as disrespectful to the course, Mickelson told critics to “toughen up,” somehow resulting in new members joining his fan club.
The PGA Championship takes Mickelson back to New York and the golfer is embracing his return, hoping fans do the same, by tweeting his own profile out in place of the heart in the slogan the city and state of New York are known best for.
