Panthers quarterback Cam Newton is not any closer to returning to the field according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.
ESPN’s Josina Anderson first reported Friday morning that Newton will visit foot specialist Dr. Robert Anderson in Green Bay this weekend.
Rapoport added to the initial report, tweeting that Newton’s “sprained foot is not getting better. He hasn’t done more than rehab to the side,” and saying that the visit is happening for an assessment about why Newton’s condition isn’t improving.
“Playing football is a long way off,” Rapoport tweeted.
Kyle Allen has started the five games since the 30-year-old suffered his Lisfranc foot injury in Carolina’s Week 2 Thursday Night Football loss to Tampa Bay. With Allen running the offense, the Panthers (4-3) are 4-1 and the team suffered its first loss with the new QB last week, visiting undefeated San Francisco.
In five starts, Allen completed 99 of 159 stars for seven touchdowns. He threw three interceptions, all versus the 49ers (8-0).
The Panthers host the Titans (4-4) Sunday.
