Watch: Panthers don’t plan to play Cam Newton until he’s 100%

The Panthers tried to rush Cam Newton back from his preseason foot sprain and look where that got them. Even though their season is in a precarious 1-2 position, the worst thing they can do is try to hurry Newton back onto the field again before he’s ready.

According to Ian Rapoport at NFL Network, the plan is to let Newton recover 100% before they put him back in the lineup.

This is the wise thing to do. Even if it’s possible Kyle Allen gets embarrassed by a brutal Texans defense this week, the Panthers have to think about Newton’s long-term health more than their immediate prospects for the 2019 season.

There’s also a decent chance Allen is far better than anyone gave him credit for when he went undrafted. For his career (two starts, three games), he’s posted six touchdowns, no interceptions, averaged 9.2 yards per pass attempt and has a 132.7 QB rating.
